The BUSSTOPS

Their most ambitious project to date was developed by the ÜSTRA in the early nineties within the framework of the campaign "Kunst im öffentlichen Raum (Art in Public Spaces)" of the City of Hanover: The BUSSTOPS. Internationally renowned architects and designers designed a total of nine stops all over the city according to their ideas.

The task for the involved builders was: Art as an extraordinary part of an ordinary service. Waiting time should no longer be regarded as lost time. Quite the contrary: it should be regarded as additional benefit for the senses of the passenger. Playful variations on the theme "station" arose, an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere for waiting was created..

BUSSTOP „Aegidientorplatz“ – Jasper Morrison

BUSSTOP „Aegidientorplatz“ - Jasper Morrison

City rail line 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 17
Bus line 100/200, 120

This steel construction is probably the most inconspicuous of all BUS STOPS. But therefore it is particularly functional. Waiting persons are protected from wind and weather from above and from three sides. You can see the bus coming in time through the glass wall. „The public is the client“, said Jasper Morrison about the idea of his design.

BUSSTOP „Maschsee / Sprengel-Museum“ - Heike Mühlhaus

BUSSTOP „Maschsee / Sprengel-Museum“ - Heike Mühlhaus

Bus line 100/200:

The roof of this BUS STOP reminds of a big whale tail. The tail is twelve metres wide and offers enough space for waiting well protected for the bus. It is an installation of the Berliner-by-choice and avant-garde artist Heike Mühlhaus. A six meters deep pillar anchors the artwork in the ground - in order to protect it against swimming away in case of bad weather.

BUSSTOP Steintor - Alessandro Mendini

BUSSTOP „Steintor“ - Alessandro Mendini

City rail line 10, 17:

The Italian architect Alessandro Mendini created a yellow-black, vast Lego landscape at the "Steintor". 20 metres long, massive, with golden turrets at the corners. It is probably one of the most noticeable and boldest BUS STOPS in Hanover.

BUSSTOP „Leinaustraße“ - Andreas Brandolini

BUSSTOP „Leinaustraße“ - Andreas Brandolini

City rail line 10
Bus line 700

It's so lovely green in Hanover Linden. In any case on the roof of the BUS STOP „Leinaustraße“. The creator is the design professor Andreas Brandolini. He wants to give a new effect to the profane things in an extraordinary atmosphere. He designed for example living room tables in form of a German "Currywurst", armchairs of Lego bricks and so he designed as well this BUS STOP with greens on the roof.

BUSSTOP „Königsworther Platz“ - Ettore Sottsass

BUSSTOP „Königsworther Platz“ - Ettore Sottsass

City rail line 4, 5
Bus line 100/200

For this BUS STOP, Ettore Sottsass reinterpreted the principe „Table“. His yellow cross grid provides the bright frame for the grey „tablecloth“, under which the passengers can wait. Black and white artificial stone makes the base of this artwork.

BUSSTOP „Nieschlagstrasse“ - Wolfgang Laubersheimer

BUSSTOP „Nieschlagstrasse“ - Wolfgang Laubersheimer

City rail line 9
Bus line 100/200

The design professor Wolfgang Laubersheimer from Cologne designed this BUS STOP with four huge calottes in such a manner that the spoken word is reflected in such a way that it can be easily understood by others even over a distance of up to 50 metres.

BUSSTOP „Friedrichswall“ - Massimo Iosa Ghini

BUSSTOP „Friedrichswall“ - Massimo Iosa Ghini

Bus line 120

Massimo Iosa Ghini presented face to face with the venerable "Wangenheim-Palais", in which today the Department of Trade and Industry is located, a futuristic, green air boat. A funny concept, followed by the reconstruction of the most important underground station in Hanover, the „Kröpcke“ at the end of the nineties - where Ghini was in charge of the implementation.

BUSSTOP „Hannover Congress Centrum“ - Oscar Tusquets Blanca

BUSSTOP „Hannover Congress Centrum“ - Oscar Tusquets Blanca

City rail line 11
Bus line 128, 134

The BUS STOP of the architect and painter from Barcelona seems to be a feather-weight construction made of glass and metal. Elegance and symmetry are the defining characteristics of this construction with extraordinary pagoda roof, located directly opposite the "Hannover Congress Centrum". A place, where you can wait perfectly relaxed..

BUSSTOP „Braunschweiger Platz“ - Frank O. Gehry

BUSSTOP „Braunschweiger Platz“ - Frank O. Gehry

City rail line 4, 5, 6, 11
Bus line 128, 134

This BUS STOP is by far not extinct yet: but due to its size and appearance reminding of a reptilian carapace it was just called "Frank's Dinosaurs" by the Italian artisans who made the complicated roof construction of rectangular green and white scales.

Vehicles

The appearance of the fleet concentrates on the criteria of a modern look and functionality.

Stations

The underground stations in Hanover are unique. They have an individual design, which takes up reference points from the local area.

Gehry Tower

With the Gehry Tower of the star architect Frank O. Gehry, which turns in on itself, Hanover got a further piece of world architecture.
